LIFE ON MARS - SERIES I EPISODE 7

You so much as belch out of line and I'll have your scrotum on a barbed wire plate.

A young man being held for a minor drugs offence dies in custody at the station while Gene and Sam are out. It seems that this detainee is put into a cell with another criminal in the aim of the Police getting this guy to talk, and DS Ray Carling is left in charge whilst the two senior officers are on other business. However they return to find that he has died - and the top brass want this 'scandal' to be sorted internally at the first available opportunity.

However Sam Tyler is not content with Gene Hunt's findings and decides that he wants to conduct a propoer investigation into the suspects death. Sam conducts the required work to get to the truth, despite clear resistance from his colleagues. After alienating all his colleagues, he is able to determine that one of them forced him to take cocaine, causing a heart attack, and that the others had been covering. This turns out to be Ray who Gene furiously demotes to Detective Constable. The viewer learns however that Ray acted in this manner in order to impress his DCI by 'getting a result.'

At the end of this episode we learn that Gene Hunt wanted Sam to conduct this internal investigation, and that it would have been difficult for him to get his hands dirty.
