LIFE ON MARS - SERIES I EPISODE 8

Gene: I think you have forgotten who you are talking to.  Sam Tyler: An overweight, over-the-hill,                     nicotine-stained, borderline-alcoholic homophobe with a superiority complex and an                                    unhealthy obsession with male bonding.

In this episode Sam Tyler again encounters his mother, and this time his father Vic Tyler. During an operation into gangland dealings Sam and his colleagues end up arresting Vic Tyler at a proposed meeting place for some members of the gang. Vic Tyler argues initially that he is a travelling salesman and Sam is all too happy to believe him. It later transpires that Vic is in fact involved heavily in this gang culture, and that he is a ruthless gangster.

Throughout Sam has childhood flashbacks of seeing his father run away from a family wedding, never to return. He attempts to convince his father to remain with his wife and son (the young Sam) and to sort out his problems - all of the time refusing to face up to his fathers criminal tendancies. Even when he learns that his father has killed others and assaulted one of his colleagues he allows his father to escape.....

Flashbacks throughout the entire series are revealed to have been from young Sam's memories of this incident that he only remembers now.
